News India Live, Digital Desk: Turmoil in Pakistan’s politics is nothing new, but when a former Prime Minister and his wife get such a big blow from the court, its impact goes far. Recently, former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have suffered a major shock. A special court there has sentenced both of them to 17 years of imprisonment in a corruption case, after which there is once again a stir in the politics of Pakistan. What is this Toshakhana-2 case? Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi have received this punishment in the Toshakhana-2 corruption case. This is also known as the ‘State Gift Case’. In this case, there were allegations that during his Prime Ministership (2018-2022), Imran Khan sold expensive government gifts received from foreign guests at low prices in violation of the rules or kept them with himself without depositing them in the state treasury. The gifts in question included an expensive Bulgari jewelery set given by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in 2021 and other expensive watches, the total value of which was reportedly more than Pakistani rupee 140 million. Judge Shahrukh Arjumand of a special court in Islamabad gave his verdict on the case inside Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail. It is noteworthy that both Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi are already in jail. The court has also imposed a heavy fine of Rs 10 million each on both of them. If they are unable to pay this fine, their punishment may increase further. The court has divided the total sentence of 17 years into 10 years rigorous imprisonment under Section 409 (criminal breach of trust) of the Pakistan Penal Code and 7 years rigorous imprisonment under the Prevention of Corruption Act. This is the third major blow to Imran Khan. Let us tell you that this is the third punishment of Imran Khan in the cases related to Toshakhana. Earlier in August 2023, a local court had sentenced him to 3 years’ imprisonment, while in January 2024, Khan and Bushra Bibi were sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment in the Toshakhana-1 case. Imran Khan and his party Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have described all these cases as a big conspiracy against them. He claims that these cases are completely fabricated and politically motivated. Now Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi can appeal against this new decision in the High Court. It will be important to see what effect these continuous decisions have on the politics of Pakistan.
