New Delhi: Since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina from power in Bangladesh, incidents of atrocities against minorities are continuously coming to light. Earlier the Hindu community was targeted and now incidents of violence are being seen on the Christian community. According to a news report, at least 17 houses of Christian Tripura community were set ablaze in Sarai Union, Lama upazila of Bandarban district of Bangladesh on Christmas eve. In this incident, many families who had gone to a nearby village to pray and celebrate Christmas were rendered homeless and their houses destroyed.

Tripura Para village targeted

Victims say the attackers targeted the new Tongjhiri Tripura Para village, where the community had rebuilt their homes after being previously displaced. According to local people, 17 out of 19 houses in the village were completely burnt down. Tongjhiri has long been home to the Tripura community, but they allege that they were forcibly evicted from here a few years ago and the land was given to the wife of a police officer during the Awami League rule.

“We have been living here for three or four generations. About four to five years ago, a group of people they called 'SP men' evicted us,” said Paispru Tripura, head of the community. After the fall of the Awami League government, the community returned and rebuilt their homes. Gungamani Tripura, another victim, said, “Our houses were completely burnt to ashes. We could not save anything. It should have been the happiest day for us, but it is like a nightmare. We are fighting against the criminals. Want strict punishment.”
