Intensive research will be done on thousands of years old history of Delhi, CM Rekha Gupta approved two new fellowships.
The Delhi government has taken a big step to bring the rich and historical past of Delhi before the world in a research-based and authentic form. The Government has approved ‘Archival Research Fellowship’ and ‘Archaeological Research Fellowship’ schemes for the purpose of scientific study, documentation and digitization of the official history of the capital. Delhi has been witness to thousands of years of history, many dynasties and different civilizations. Important information related to its history is still preserved in records, ancient manuscripts, archaeological sites and historical monuments. The objective of the new fellowship schemes is to systematically, scientifically and research-based study of this heritage and preserve it in digital form.
The ‘Archives Research Fellowship’ and ‘Archaeological Research Fellowship’ schemes have been approved in the cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The objective of these schemes is to carry out scientific study, systematic documentation and digitization of historical documents, records and archaeological heritage of the capital. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that Delhi is not only the capital of the country but also a living heritage of thousands of years of history, culture and civilization. He said that conservation of this priceless heritage, its scientific study, systematic documentation and ensuring its accessibility to the new generation are among the priorities of the Delhi Government. It is for this purpose that both the research fellowship schemes have been approved.
The Chief Minister said that the objective of ‘Archives Research Fellowship’ is to promote high-level research on records, strengthen records management, encourage digitization of historical records and make the access of common people and researchers to documents of historical importance more simple and accessible.
Every year 15 fellows will get research opportunity
This fellowship scheme will provide an institutional platform to researchers, epigraphists, conservation experts, historians, linguists and heritage experts for in-depth study and research on topics related to the history and epigraphy of Delhi. Under the scheme, work will be done on records management, conservation and preservation of archival material, digitization of records, dissemination of information and data, micro-filming and reprography, research and publications and especially on subjects related to ancient languages like Urdu and Persian. Under this scheme, 15 fellows will be appointed every year for a period of one year. The selected fellows will be provided fellowship ranging from Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 per month according to their research work, so that they can contribute to the conservation and research of Delhi’s historical and archival heritage.
Along with heritage conservation, tourism will also get a boost
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that the objective of the ‘Archaeological Research Fellowship’ is to study, conserve and promote the rich archaeological sites and historical monuments of Delhi. Through this scheme, research related to history, archaeology, architecture and conservation of lesser known historical monuments of the capital will be especially encouraged. He said that this initiative will not only strengthen the conservation of cultural and historical heritage of Delhi, but will also give a boost to tourism by giving new identity to these sites and give new impetus to heritage based tourism. Under the scheme, 12 fellows will be appointed every year for a period of one year. The selected fellows will be provided a fellowship of Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 per month for their research work, so that they can actively contribute to the conservation and research work of the archaeological heritage of Delhi.
Application rules and guidelines will be released soon
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that through both these fellowship schemes, a strong group of trained and skilled experts will be created in the field of archives, archeology and heritage conservation. He said that this will not only give a new direction to academic research, but will also strengthen the conservation and promotion of Delhi’s documentary and archaeological heritage. According to the Chief Minister, detailed guidelines related to eligibility, application process, selection process and other terms and conditions for both the fellowship schemes will be notified separately by the concerned departments. Both these schemes are expected to be launched soon after the operational guidelines are issued, so that interested researchers and experts can apply.
