Gumla: In the heinous case of rape of a 13-year-old disabled minor, the court of District and Additional Sessions Judge-4 cum POCSO Special Judge Sanjeev Bhatia has sentenced the accused Tantrik Sanjay Vishwakarma to death under the POCSO Act. Besides, a fine of Rs 2 lakh has also been imposed. The matter is of January 2022.

Hunt made in the name of exorcism

According to the prosecution, the accused, who is a resident of Ichaak in Hazaribagh district, won the trust of the victim’s family and promised to cure the girl’s disability. He kept claiming treatment in the name of exorcism and tantric rituals. On this pretext, he raped the girl for several months, asking her to keep her in a separate room. Later he absconded without giving any information.

On August 26, 2022, the family members became suspicious after seeing the abnormal physical condition of the girl. The entire matter came to light after medical examination confirmed her pregnancy. The victim’s father immediately lodged an FIR. Investigation also revealed that the accused had cheated about Rs 25 thousand in the name of exorcism.

Court’s harsh comment

During the hearing, Special Additional Public Prosecutor Sudhir Kumar Toppo presented the statements of witnesses and medical evidence. The court justified the harshest punishment considering the seriousness of the crime, age and disability of the victim. The judgment said that such crimes shake the moral conscience of the society and strict punishment is necessary.
