Tvisha Sharma was found hanging in her in-laws house on May 12.

New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Monday said it was distressed over the manner in which the case of model-turned-actress Tvisha Sharma’s death was being handled. The court also asked the media to exercise restraint while reporting the developments related to this case.

Tvisha Sharma (33) was found hanging on May 12 at her in-laws’ house in Katara Hills area of Bhopal. Her family has accused her in-laws of dowry harassment and abetting suicide. Tvisha’s in-laws claimed that she was suffering from drug addiction.

Police have registered an FIR against the woman’s husband and lawyer Samarth Singh and her mother-in-law and former district judge Giribala Singh on charges of dowry harassment. A bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said it would ensure that the investigation in the case is fair, independent and without bias.

The bench said, we are distressed by some of the actions. We would request our media friends to avoid taking statements from the victim’s family or the family of the other party. Let things proceed as per law and procedure. We request the media not to record the statements of the victim’s family and not to present their pain as mere ‘sound bites’.

The bench said that one should avoid creating any discussion in this matter. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Madhya Pradesh government, said that due to the intervention of the media, significant progress has been made in the case. He said that this case is a message to all parents that it is better for the daughter to get divorced than to face such an unfortunate incident.

The Supreme Court took note of the Solicitor General’s submission that he would take up the matter with the authorities to ensure that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) immediately takes over the investigation.

The bench said, “We would like to ask the family members of the victim as well as the family members of the accused to record their views before the investigating agency instead of giving statements in public or on media platforms so that the ongoing investigation is not adversely affected or prejudiced.”

We also request the media to desist from recording the statements of persons who are potential witnesses, as this may have undue influence on the findings of the issues which are to be investigated, the bench said.

The court took cognizance and disposed of the filed case. The court said, we also request the people to avoid speculation and have faith in one of the premier investigating agencies of the country. We are confident that the agency will conclude the investigation when the time comes.
