Income Tax New Rules: CBDT Launches ‘Prarambh’ – Key Benefits for Taxpayers
Income Tax New Rules: Big news for taxpayers. On March 20th, Ravi Agarwal, the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), introduced “PRARAMBH.” This initiative aims to enhance taxpayer convenience and will aid in the rollout of the new income tax regulations. The Income Tax Act, 2025, is set to take effect on April 1st of this year.
What does commencement mean?
During an event attended by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and other senior officials, Agarwal elaborated on the meaning of PRARAMBH. He mentioned that it stands for Policy Reform and Responsible Action for Mission Viksit Bharat (PRARAMBH). He emphasized that this initiative marks a significant advancement in the evolution of tax administration in the nation.
Have new tax rules and procedures been created?
While discussing the new Income Tax Act, he pointed out that the changes extend beyond mere legislation. The goal is to foster taxpayer confidence through established rules, forms, and an improved process. The new regulations are designed to be straightforward and transparent. The government has removed numerous outdated income tax rules, leading to a substantial decrease in the total number of regulations.
No compliance required for 60 million transactions
Highlighting the importance of the tax reforms, the CBDT Chairman noted that the total number of tax rules has been cut down from 510 to 333. Additionally, the number of forms has been reduced from 399 to 190, which is about a 52% decrease. He stated that this simplification of the tax system will remove compliance obligations for over 60 million transactions.
2,200 FAQs have been prepared for taxpayers
He mentioned that more than 2,200 FAQs and guidance notes for 186 forms have been created to assist taxpayers. The CBDT Chairman also shared that Prarambh will feature multimedia campaigns, educational resources, and digital tools to enhance understanding of the new Act. Furthermore, he announced the introduction of “Car Saathi,” an AI-powered chatbot that will offer 24/7 support to taxpayers via the Income Tax Department’s website.
New website and guidance tools will launch in phases
Aggarwal stated that digital services, including a new website and guidance tools, will be launched in a phased manner. This will provide taxpayers with a technology-driven experience. Assistance will also be provided through the Income Tax Service Centre, which will provide taxpayers with hassle-free digital access. He added that the spirit of “Nagrik Devo Bhava” (Citizen is God) is behind this initiative.
