Cancer patients are increasing rapidly in India. According to figures presented by the government in Parliament, there were approximately 1.392 million cancer patients in the country in 2020, which is projected to increase to 1.533 million by 2024. This represents an increase of more than 10 percent in just five years. A state-wise analysis also revealed that smaller Union Territories have seen the fastest percentage increase, while larger states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Bihar have higher total number of cases.

Where did the number of patients increase the most?
According to government data, Daman saw a 39.51% increase in cancer cases. Moreover, Dadra and Nagar Haveli (30.09%), Sikkim (26.06%), Lakshadweep (18.52%) and Manipur (18.48%) also saw a significant increase. Delhi, Haryana, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka also saw growth of over 10 percent. According to the report, tobacco consumption, pollution and lifestyle factors are playing an important role in this increase.
Higher burden in states with higher population
In terms of population, the states of Uttar Pradesh (2.21 lakh), Maharashtra (1.27 lakh), West Bengal (1.18 lakh) and Bihar (1.15 lakh) reported the highest number of cases. The percentage increase in these states may seem small, but the total number is huge.

The year-on-year increase in cancer patients in India from 2020 to 2024 was as follows: • 2020: 13,92,179 • 2021: 14,26,447 • 2022: 14,61,427 • 2023: 14,96,972 • 2024: 15,33,055 Approximately one million new patients are added every year.
Reasons for increase in cancer patients
According to ICMR, there are several reasons behind the increase in patients. Changes in lifestyle, increased consumption of tobacco and alcohol, growth in the aging population and increased health awareness have led to an increase in the number of patients. Pollution has also become a major challenge in urban areas.
Cancer has become a rapidly growing health challenge in India. A comprehensive strategy for prevention, screening and treatment is needed.
