Actually, captain Rohit Sharma may miss the first test due to personal reasons and now Gill's injury has increased the team's problems. In the absence of Rohit, Gill was being seen as an alternative to the opening batsman. Now news is coming out that Ruturaj Gaikwad or Devdutt Padikkal, who went to Australia with the India-A team, may be asked to stay with the Test team. Let us tell you that Team India's 18-member squad for the Australia tour was announced, along with which three fast bowlers have been kept as reserve players. That means there is no reserve player as a batsman.

According to a Cricbuzz report, the India A team led by Ruturaj Gaikwad (Devdutt Padikkal) is still in Australia and the selectors may ask some batsmen to stay for the series as backup. No decision has been taken on this front till Saturday night. Gaikwad was the best batsman outside the Test team during the practice matches and looked quite solid outside his off-stump, unlike most of his batting partners.

On the other hand, left-handed batsman Devdutt Padikkal also performed well in the first session on Saturday and he also looked quite comfortable against Jasprit Bumrah. It remains to be seen whether either Gaikwad or Padikkal is retained and if so, whether one of them gets a chance to replace Gill. The situation is also not clear whether he will be a part of the main team or join the reserves.
