Actually, due to a knee injury, Mohammed Shami was not included in the 18-member Indian team for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Shami is continuously out of the team after playing the ODI World Cup. He returned to the field through Ranji Trophy. Shami is playing in domestic cricket and the BCCI medical team was constantly keeping an eye on him.

Giving information on Shami's fitness, BCCI said, BCCI's medical team was working closely with Indian fast bowler Shami so that he can recover from the injury soon. Shami had completely recovered from the ankle injury. Shami bowled 43 overs for Bengal against Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy. In addition, he played all nine matches of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he participated in extra bowling sessions to be fit for the Test matches.

The BCCI said, however, that Shami had slight swelling in his left knee due to the bowling workload. Swelling is at the expected level after bowling continuously for a long time. Based on the current medical assessment, the BCCI medical team has determined that his knee requires more time for controlled exposure to bowling loads. For this reason Shami has not been declared fit for the remaining two tests of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
