IND VS AUS: You will have to work hard to keep yourself alive in the ODI series against Australia, know what is Harmanpreet’s planning.
Hobart: If reigning world champions India want to keep the three-match ODI series against Australia alive after losing badly in the first match, they will have to perform better in batting in the second Women’s ODI cricket match to be held here on Friday. After winning the T20 series 2-1, the Indian team did not make a good start to the ODI series and lost the first match played in Brisbane by six wickets. The Indian women’s team has never won a bilateral ODI series against Australia. Australia has dominated the series played between these two countries in this format.
So far 11 bilateral ODI series have been played between the two teams, in which Australia won all of them. These also include a 3-0 win in 2024 and a 2-1 win in September 2025. But India will look to take inspiration from their five-wicket win over Australia in the semi-finals of the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025.
In the first match of the current series, Indian batsmen failed to face the challenge of Australia and the entire team was out for only 214 runs. Except vice-captain Smriti Mandhana (58), captain Harmanpreet Kaur (53) and Kasvi Gautam (43), no other Indian batsman could play big innings. He was seen struggling against the disciplined bowling of Australia. Pratika Raval could not even open the account while starting the innings. Shefali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma also did not live up to the expectations.
India will be expecting a good performance from these four on Friday. Wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh, who is adept at hitting big shots, also had to struggle and could score only 23 runs. The team will expect better performance from him. Among the bowlers, left-arm spinner Shree Charani took two wickets for 41 runs in her nine overs but she needs help from bowlers like Deepti Sharma and Kasvi in the middle overs. But the responsibility of causing damage to the opposition team in the initial overs will be on fast bowlers Renuka Singh and Kranti Gaur, who failed in the first match. The Indian team management may also consider including all-rounders Amanjot Kaur and Sneh Rana in the team. India’s senior all-rounder Deepti is hopeful that the team will be successful in making a comeback in the second ODI and leveling the series.
“We performed well as a team but the result did not go our way,” he said. We will make a strong comeback in the next match. We are not thinking too much about it and are focusing on our strong points.” Australia, on the other hand, will be looking to give a grand farewell to captain Alyssa Healy by winning the series in the second match itself. Healy is playing in his last international series. He had scored a half-century in the last match.
Healy and Phoebe Lichfield performed well and made a half-century partnership for the first wicket and they would like to continue this trend. It was very easy for Australia to chase the target. Beth Mooney (76) and Annabel Sutherland (48 not out) made a partnership of 85 runs for the fourth wicket to take the team to the target. Australia’s bowling has also been excellent, with Megan Shutt, Ashley Gardner, Alana King, Tahila McGrath and Sophie Molineux all taking wickets while bowling economically. After the ODI series between these two teams, a day-night test match will be played in Perth. The series trophy will be decided on a points basis combining performances across all three formats, with two points each for a T20 and 50-over win and four points for a Test win.
The teams are as follows:
India: Harmanpreet Kaur (Captain), Smriti Mandhana (Vice-Captain), Shefali Verma, Renuka Thakur, Shree Charani, Vaishnavi Sharma, Kranti Gaur, Sneh Rana, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh (WK), Uma Chhetri (WK), Amanjot Kaur, Jemimah Rodrigues, Kashvi Gautam, Harleen Deol, Pratika Rawal.
Australia: Alyssa Healy (captain), Sophie Molini (vice-captain), Darcey Brown, Nicola Carey, Ashley Gardner, Kim Garth, Alana King, Phoebe Litchfield, Beth Mooney, Tahlia McGrath, Ellyse Perry, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Woll, Georgia Wareham.
