IND vs ENG Semi-Final: 41 years old history will knock again, will India lift the third trophy in the fifth clash?
New Delhi. T20 World Cup 2026 has reached its decisive phase and now all eyes are on the India-England semi-final to be held at Wankhede Stadium on March 5. Before the final to be played on March 8, this match will not only decide the ‘ticket to the final’, but is also bringing with it a historical coincidence, which has made Team India the champion in the past also. Statistics are testifying that whenever India has defeated England in the semi-finals, it has captured the trophy. Now for the fifth time both the teams are facing each other in the semi-finals of the ICC tournament and history is once again standing on the threshold of repeating itself.
Equal competition in semi-finals, but coincidence is with India
If we look at the history of ICC tournaments, India and England have clashed in the semi-finals four times so far. Both the teams have won two matches each. Interestingly, on the two occasions when India defeated England, it won the title both those times. In such a situation, if Team India wins on March 5, then the path to the third trophy may also open. This will be the third time after 1983 and 2024 when this particular equation seems to be in favor of Team India.
1983: From ‘underdog’ to champion
The first semi-final match between India and England was in the 1983 ODI World Cup. At that time, the Indian team, which was considered ‘underdog’ against the host England, had bowled out England for 213 runs in 60 overs. Under the captaincy of Kapil Dev, the bowlers performed brilliantly and India scored 217 runs losing 4 wickets in 54.4 overs and won by 6 wickets. After this, India lifted the World Cup trophy for the first time by defeating West Indies in the final. This was the victory that changed the future of Indian cricket.
1987: Gooch’s innings and India’s dream broken
Four years later, in the 1987 World Cup, the two teams met again in the semi-finals. This time England scored 254 runs for 6 wickets in 50 overs. Graham Gooch played a brilliant inning of 136 runs in 115 balls. In reply, the Indian team was reduced to 219 runs. Even Mohammad Azharuddin’s 64 runs could not ensure victory. This match also proved to be Sunil Gavaskar’s last international match.
2022: crushing defeat in Adelaide
The third clash took place in Adelaide in the 2022 T20 World Cup. Batting first, India scored 168 runs, in which Hardik Pandya (63) and Virat Kohli (50) played important roles. But England’s Jos Buttler (80*) and Alex Hales (86*) made an unbroken partnership of 170 runs and achieved the target in just 16 overs and defeated India by 10 wickets.
2024: History repeated again after 41 years
India took revenge by defeating England by 68 runs in the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-finals. India had scored 171 runs for 7 wickets. In reply, the England team collapsed for 103 runs in 16.4 overs. Rohit Sharma scored 57 runs in 39 balls, while Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel took 3 wickets each. Jasprit Bumrah secured the victory by taking 2 wickets. After this victory, India also won the title.
Now once again in 2026, India and England are face to face. There is a 2-2 tie in the four matches, but coincidence appears to be in favor of India. The question is whether 41 years old history will be repeated again and Team India will reach the trophy for the third time in the fifth encounter? The answer is going to be found on Wankhede ground.
