Simon Doull questions Rohit’s “hunger” for 2027 ODI World Cup
Former New Zealand fast bowler Simon Doull reflected on Rohit’s difficulties during commentary on Star Sports Network, questioning whether the former Indian captain still has a clear target to inspire performances.
Doull suggested that throughout his career, Rohit has flourished when he is chasing a concrete objective, such as an upcoming ICC tournament. With the next 50-over World Cup to be held in South Africa in 2027, Doull questioned whether that milestone was too far away to provide immediate inspiration. He also noted that the modern international calendar constantly shifts focus between formats, which may affect players active in only one format.
Doull also highlighted the realities of the schedule facing Rohit. India currently T20 World Cup ODI cricket has received less priority, resulting in fewer opportunities for ODI specialists to find rhythm. 50-over cricket has been limited over the past four months, and the calendar suggests a similar lack of form in the coming months.
“I think with Rohit, there’s always a goal to achieve something, whether it’s a T20 World Cup, whether it’s a 50-over World Cup. I just think, that ’27 World Cup in South Africa, is that far away? Does he really have the hunger? Maybe it’s just, I mean, every year is different, right? Because we’re building. We’re building as national teams go, no matter who you are,” Dole said.
“Every year, you are preparing for a different format of the ICC event, right?”
According to Doull, Rohit’s next appearance in India colors could be during the UK tour in July, indicating that the lack of match time could impact the fixture. When a player competes in only one format, long breaks between series can disrupt momentum and make it difficult to regain form quickly.
“When you are playing only one format, you don’t get a lot of opportunities. The next time he will be in the Indian uniform will be, what, in the UK in July? It is a long way off.”
Despite the debate, Rohit’s importance in India’s ODI setup remains vital. His experience at the top and ability to perform in big matches is considered valuable by the team management. However, with young batsmen demanding expanded roles and competition increasing, expectations for consistent contributions remain high.
