IND vs NZ: Washington Sundar Added to India's Test Squad for Remainder of the Series

After India lost out on the opening Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made an addition to the Indian squad for the remainder of the series.

The spin-bowling all-rounder, Washington Sundar has been officially added to the Indian squad for upcoming games against New Zealand. Sundar will link up with the squad in Pune ahead of the second fixture.

The 25-year-old all-rounder last played a Test against England in Ahmedabad in March 2021. He has been in some fine form of late with the bat where he scored 152 runs for Tamil Nadu in their ongoing Ranji Trophy match against Delhi at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. With the ball, he also picked up two wickets so far.

With World Test Championship (WTC) points up for grabs, it comes as a surprising move to add another spin-bowling all-rounder to the squad when the side already has the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin.

With Rishabh Pant’s participation in the second Test doubtful, India could look to bring in Sundar in place of Kuldeep Yadav to bring in more batting depth to the side.

Pant’s status is yet to be revealed by the BCCI and his selection for the coming games is yet to be known at this time.

India will hope to get back to their best after suffering a defeat by eight wickets against the Kiwis in Bengaluru. With the series and WTC points at stake, the Indian team must return to their best form so that they can carry some momentum through to their upcoming series against Australia as well in November, later this year.

India’s updated squad for the second and third Test against New Zealand: Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav. Mohd. Siraj, Akash Deep, Washington Sundar.
