IND vs SA: Jasprit Bumrah breaks Ravichandran Ashwin’s T20 World Cup record. Read

India’s leading fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah against South Africa at Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 He added another brilliant chapter to his illustrious career during the encounter, becoming India’s all-time highest wicket-taker in T20 World Cup history, equaling Ravichandran Ashwin’s record.

Record breaking moment: Jasprit Bumrah’s double strike

Bumrah needed three wickets in the match to break Ashwin’s tally of 32 wickets in the T20 World Cup. He did not have to wait long to achieve this feat. In the second over of South Africa’s innings, Bumrah displayed a brilliant bowling performance and clean bowled Quinton de Kock.

This wicket was Bumrah’s specialty – a ball bowled at 137 kmph that angled wide of the crease and came back sharply, falling off De Kock’s leg stump. The South African opener, who was attempting to slog across the line, made no foot movement and missed completely, shattering his stumps. De Kock returned to the pavilion after scoring only 6 runs in 7 balls, giving India the breakthrough they desperately needed.

But Bumrah’s work was not over. In his next over, he took his second wicket of the innings – and his 32nd wicket in the T20 World Cup – dismissing Ryan Rickleton, who edged a slower ball to Shivam Dubey. With these two wickets, Bumrah equalized with Ashwin and then crossed Ashwin’s figure by dismissing Corbin Bosch for 5 runs.

Bumrah’s bowling shook South Africa

South African captain Aiden Markram won the toss and elected to bat first, hoping to put pressure on the Indian bowling attack. However, Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh had other plans.

Arshdeep bowled tightly in the first over, Bumrah dismissed De Kock in his first over. He took the wicket of Rickleton in his next over to reduce South Africa to 20/3 inside the powerplay. The Proteas’ top order had disintegrated, and Bumrah’s figures at that time were 2 wickets and only 6 runs in 2 overs – a testament to his accuracy and control.

These early breakthroughs put India in complete control as the defending champions looked to establish their dominance in the Super 8 clash. For Bumrah, the three wickets were not just about a personal milestone but about giving his team the lead in a match that was being seen as a dress rehearsal for a possible final encounter.
