IND vs SA ODI series: “Sundar’s role is clear…” Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s statement in discussion
Ravichandran Ashwin’s commentary on Washington Sundar: India and South Africa A three-match ODI series is being played between them. Two matches have been played and the third and final match is being played at Visakhapatnam. India won the first match and South Africa won the second match. Meanwhile, former spinner Ravichandran Ashwin said the Indian team management should clarify Washington Sundar’s role in the team and if not, the all-rounder will remain confused about his role.
Ashwin said that Washington should be treated as a bowling all-rounder and given full overs, which would boost his confidence in batting as well. The 26-year-old bowled just seven overs in the first two ODIs against South Africa and is yet to take a single wicket. Ashwin said on his YouTube channel that once you decide to include Washington Sundar in the playing XI, you have to do it.

His role should be seen as a bowler who can also bat. You have to make him bowl his full overs. He said that just by bowling consistently, his (Washington’s) mindset will be that of a bowler who can also bat.
Lack of a finisher in the team
If he just bats and bowls a few overs, he will question his role in the team. He should not be left in this position and the team should clarify his proper role. India failed to defend 358 in the second ODI and South Africa won by four wickets to level the three-match series. In the first ODI, India scored 348 runs and won the match by 17 runs. Ashwin feels that the Indian team is missing a good finisher in Hardik Pandya’s absence. Ashwin said that even in the first two ODIs, India did not bat well.
