IND-W vs NZ-W | Twitter reacts to seething Harman quarrel with umpire over botched LBW verdict

People often discuss the intense pressure on batters and bowlers during live matches, but the significant stress that match officials experience under the spotlight is rarely highlighted. Similarly, Gayathri Venugopal happened to be on the receiving end of criticism from Harmanpareet Kaur at Motera.

Winning the toss under the scorching heat of Ahmedabad, New Zealand’s decision to bat first didn’t come as a surprise. A formidable 87- run opening stand coupled with Sophie Devine’s 79 and Maddy Green’s 42 in the middle order steered the White Ferns to 259/9 in 50 overs. In response, India didn’t quite got off to a desirable start with the top three departing by the fifth over. While Harmanpreet Kaur stood fighting from one end, her concentration was disrupted by a botched decision from on-field umpire, thus breaking into anger.

Having hit just a four and a six in the 33 balls she faced, Harmanpreet tried to look for scoring options by intending a short-arm jab off Sophie Devine on the 16th over’s last ball. As the ball shaped into the batter with the over the wicket angle, the Indian skipper was beaten on the inside edge and incurred a thud at the pad. On appealing, umpire Gayathri signaled it, compelling the batter to opt for a review. With no bat in contact, the white cherry was vividly missing the leg stump, leaving Harmanpreet breathing. However, the attention shifted to the Haryana-born’s fuming expressions at Gayathri, leading umpire Vrinda Rathi to intervene and console Harmanpreet. Time and again, the Indian skipper has been in the headlines for losing his temper, and the Twitterverse suggested this to be one of them.
