India changed the rules regarding stay of foreigners
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has notified the Immigration and Foreigners (Amendment) Rules, 2026. Under this, many important changes have been made in the deadline for registration of foreign citizens, emergency provisions and appeal process.
According to the amended rules, foreign citizens coming to India will now be able to register themselves any time before the completion of 180 days of arrival in the country. Earlier the rule was that after completion of 180 days it was mandatory to get registration done within 14 days.
Under the new rules, now after the expiry of the 180 day period, late registration will be allowed only in emergency circumstances.
The Home Ministry says that the purpose of these changes is to make the registration process more clear and systematic, so that cases related to foreign citizens can be better managed.
