India add key all-rounder to the squad after defeat to New Zealand in first Test

The BCCI made the decision of adding Washington Sundar to the Indian squad for the second and third Test after they suffered an 8-wicket defeat at the hands of New Zealand in Bengaluru. The victory saw the Black Caps win their first Test on Indian soil in 36 years.

Sundar, who is currently playing for Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy, played a brilliant knock of 152 against Delhi. The all-rounder will link up with the squad in Pune ahead of the second Test, said the BCCI in a release.

The 25-year-old, who was part of the Bangladesh T20I series earlier this month, has so far played 4 Tests after making his debut against Australia in 2021 in the Border-Gavaskar series. His last Test appearance came in the home series against England in Ahmedabad in the same year.

With India already having 3 spinners namely – Ravichandran Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja in their lineup, it is expected that Sundar will replace one of them for the second Test against New Zealand which is set to commence from October 24.
