India is among the five countries where people are living in extreme poverty, read this report

New Delhi: A new report of the United Nations has revealed that India is among the five countries where the largest number of people are living in extreme poverty. According to this report, about 1.1 billion people in the world are facing extreme poverty, half of whom are minors.

The Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), released by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) of the University of Oxford, states that 40 percent of the 1.1 billion poor people live in countries that are There are those of war, instability or less peace.

The number of people living in extreme poverty in India is 234 million, which falls under the medium Human Development Index. Apart from India, there are four other countries in which a high number of people are living in poverty. If we talk about these four countries, it includes Pakistan (9.3 crore), Ethiopia (8.6 crore), Nigeria (7.4 crore) and Congo (6.6 crore). According to the report, about 48.1 percent of the world's extreme poor are living in these five countries.

More than half of the 1.1 billion poor people are under 18 years of age.

The report also revealed that out of 1.1 billion poor people, about 584 million are below 18 years of age. Globally, the poverty rate among children is 27.9 percent, while among adults the rate is 13.5 percent. Of those living in poverty, 828 million lack access to sanitation, 886 million lack housing, and 998 million lack clean cooking fuel.

In South Asia, 272 million poor people live in households where at least one person is undernourished. At the same time, in Sub-Saharan Africa this number is 256 million. The report said that about 83.7 percent of poor people reside in rural areas. The poverty rate in rural areas is 28.0 percent, while in urban areas it is only 6.6 percent.

According to the report, 218 million (19.0 percent) poor people live in war-affected countries, and about 40 percent, or 455 million people, live in countries that are victims of war, instability or less peace. UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner said the conflict has worsened in recent years, resulting in millions of people being displaced and widespread disruption to life.

The United Nations Development Program and Oxford have been releasing the MPI every year since 2010, based on ten indicators including health, education and living standards. This year's index analyzes data from 112 countries around the world, home to 6.3 billion people. This report presents a serious challenge to the ongoing global efforts towards poverty reduction.
