India appointed Vikram Doraiswami as Ambassador to China, know about him

The Government of India has appointed experienced diplomat Vikram Doraiswami as the new Ambassador of India to China. His appointment has come at a time when efforts to improve relations between India and China have intensified. After more than four years of military tension in eastern Ladakh, both the countries are now moving towards normalizing relations. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Doraiswamy may soon take charge in Beijing.

Are India-China relations improving?

There was a significant decline in India-China relations after the violent clash in Galwan Valley in the year 2020. This tension was considered the most serious in decades. However, in recent months both countries have tried to stabilize the situation through dialogue and diplomatic efforts. This military standoff effectively ended in October 2024, after which the process of bringing relations back on track is now underway.

Vikram Doraiswami’s career has been quite diverse and rich. After completing his post-graduation in History from Delhi University, he also worked in journalism for a year. After this he joined the Indian Foreign Service. After his initial training, his first posting in 1994 was as Third Secretary in Hong Kong. There he also studied Chinese language and obtained a diploma. After this he went to Beijing in 1996, where he worked for four years.

Worked as private secretary to PM

In the year 2000, he was made Deputy Chief of Protocol in the Ministry of External Affairs. After this he was given responsibility in the Prime Minister’s Office, where he also worked as the Private Secretary to the Prime Minister. He has also served in the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York and the Consulate General in Johannesburg, South Africa.

After returning to New Delhi, he handled matters related to South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). Later he became Joint Secretary of the Americas Division in the Ministry of External Affairs. In 2014, he was appointed India’s Ambassador to Uzbekistan and then in 2015 he also served on the same post in South Korea.

Apart from this, he has also served important responsibilities as High Commissioner to Bangladesh and High Commissioner of India to Britain. Doraiswami is proficient in Mandarin, French and to some extent Korean, which further strengthens his diplomatic role.
