“Our consumer demand and lifestyle choices are themselves going to drive the economy,” he said. They will also shape the scale and 'connectivity' of services as we promote trade, tourism, easy inter-country movement and education. The scope of our efforts extends far beyond the immediate area.”
He said, “Cooperation can also be important in solving contemporary challenges. Ensuring food security in an era of extreme climate change is a matter of great concern. Similarly, with the experience of global pandemics, preparedness for health security is no less important.
Jaishankar said that there are and will remain political challenges in a common region like Myanmar, which India and ASEAN will have to solve together.

He said that relations between India and ASEAN are based on deep cultural and civilizational links and its flourishing is important in itself.
The Minister underlined India's contribution in the restoration of heritage and preservation of art forms in recent times.
He said that the India-ASEAN partnership is now in its fourth decade and has immense potential.
“Bilateral and trilateral relations have contributed to our closeness,” he said.
The minister gave the example of Mekong Ganga cooperation and Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand trilateral development and said that the impact of these initiatives is being felt.
As the Indo-Pacific region develops, India is expressing its support for the centrality and solidarity of ASEAN.
“India has been equally clear about respect for international law, rules and norms both in terms of approach and substance as the inclination (towards each other) has only increased over the last four decades,” he said. This is a foundation upon which we can aspire to higher ambitions.”
