Tourist visa is being restored again between India and Bangladesh, you can apply from this day; Dinesh Trivedi’s announcement
India’s newly appointed High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi on Thursday made a big announcement to restart travel visa service for Bangladeshi citizens. This is being considered a very important step towards removing the bitterness and tension that had been prevailing in the relations between the two neighboring countries for a long time. Dinesh Trivedi made this announcement immediately after handing over his identity card to Bangladesh President Mohammad Shahabuddin at the Bangabhavan Presidential Palace in Dhaka. With this he has officially taken over his diplomatic responsibilities in Dhaka.
According to news agency PTI, Dinesh Trivedi said, ‘I am very happy to inform that the normal travel visa service is being resumed. For this, visa applications can be submitted from June 28 onwards.
Why was the Indian visa of Bangladeshi citizens stopped?
During the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus in Bangladesh, travel visa services were completely halted for the last two years due to security concerns and deteriorating relations between the two countries. After massive protests in July 2024, the then Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina had to step down and took refuge in India. After this political upheaval, the tension between the two countries increased to such an extent that the Indian visa centers present in Bangladesh had to stop their work.
After this, the death of student leader Sharif Usman Hadi added fuel to the fire, against which massive protests took place in Bangladesh and gradually these protests took an anti-India stance.
Trying to get relationships back on track
This resumption of travel visa service is happening at a time when India and Bangladesh are trying to improve their relations after months of diplomatic tension. With this decision, mutual contact and relations between the common people of both the countries will be strengthened again. Generally, through this travel visa, Bangladeshi citizens can come to India for tourism, medical treatment, government work, business and transit to any third country.
High Commissioner Trivedi made it clear that visa services will be started from all the five centers including Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Sylhet and Khulna and it will be expanded further in the coming time. Along with this, he also assured that the ‘Emergency Medical Visa’ service given on humanitarian grounds will continue as before.
First politician to become High Commissioner
76-year-old senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dinesh Trivedi was appointed India’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh on April 27. He is the first politician in the country to hold this prestigious post, otherwise generally IFS officers have been appointed to this post. He was also given the status equivalent to ‘Union Minister’ for ceremonial and protocol functions through an official memorandum issued by the Union Home Ministry a day before assuming charge.
Dinesh Trivedi has replaced professional diplomat Pranay Kumar Verma and had reached Bangladesh on June 12 through the Benapole-Petrapole land border. In this special ceremony of handing over the identity card, the contingent of the Presidential Guard Regiment also gave him ‘Guard of Honour’.
