India becomes the country with the third largest petrol pump network in the world

New Delhi, 25 December 2025: IndiaEconomy India is progressing rapidly on the economic front. India is going to become the third largest economy in the world in the next few years, but even before that India has achieved a big achievement. In terms of petrol pump network, India has now become the third largest country in the world after America and China. The number of petrol pumps in the country has crossed the 1,00,000 mark, due to which America and China have lost their sleep.

  • America-only 10 thousand degrees away from China

At present America and China have approximately 1.10 lakh to 1.20 lakh petrol pumps. India is now only 10,000 pumps behind them. Seeing the way government and private oil companies are expanding their network in rural and interior areas, India is likely to soon catch up with these two countries or leave them behind.

  • Network doubled in last 10 years

There has been unprecedented growth in the fuel retail network in India in the last decade. Former chairman of Indian Oil B. According to Ashok, this expansion has solved the problem of availability of fuel in rural areas. A decade ago, the share of rural areas in total pumps was 22 percent, which has now increased to 29 percent. Now petrol pumps are not limited to just oil, CNG and EV charging facility is also available on third of the pumps.

Despite policy reforms, India’s fuel market is still dominated by government companies. The share of private companies is less than 10 percent. Reliance Industries has about 2,100 pumps and Naira Energy has 6,900 pumps. According to experts, private investment has been limited due to government price controls.

In the last 10 years, the consumption of petrol in India has increased by 110 percent and the demand for diesel has increased by 32 percent. However, some experts are also raising questions against this aggressive expansion. Harish Mehta, former CEO of Reliance BP Mobility, had said that India has more pumps than required, many of which are unproductive. On the other hand, according to the Dealer Association, maintaining the economic viability of old pumps is a big challenge for the government.

In the coming time, petrol pumps will not only be used for filling fuel, but will also develop as charging points for gas and electric vehicles. This will increase the income of companies and customers will get all the facilities at one place.
