INDIA Bloc’s big Delhi huddle: Unity show or growing cracks? Opposition leaders meet amid high political stakes
The opposition INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance) bloc is holding a crucial meeting in New Delhi on Monday, with 23 political parties confirming their participation in what is being described as one of the coalition’s most significant strategy sessions in recent months. The meeting comes amid growing questions over the alliance’s cohesion following recent electoral setbacks and differences among several constituent parties.
Seeking to project a message of unity, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh said the alliance remains strong despite some parties choosing not to attend. According to the Congress, leaders from 23 opposition parties are participating in the “INDIA Janbandhan” meeting at the Constitution Club in New Delhi. Ramesh emphasized that even those parties skipping the gathering have communicated their strong opposition to the policies of the Narendra Modi-led government.
What is expected to be discussed?
The meeting is expected to focus on reviving opposition coordination after a turbulent political period marked by assembly election defeats for some alliance partners and increasing friction within the bloc. Leaders are likely to discuss:
- A common strategy against the BJP-led NDA government
- Coordination on parliamentary issues
- Strengthening opposition unity ahead of future elections
- Managing differences among alliance partners
- State-level electoral cooperation
- Long-term preparations for the 2029 Lok Sabha election and upcoming Assembly polls
Congress leaders have indicated that the agenda will become clearer after the meeting concludes, but political observers believe the primary objective is to demonstrate that the opposition alliance remains politically relevant despite internal disagreements.
Who Is Attending?
Several prominent opposition leaders are expected to participate in the discussions, including representatives from:
- Indian National Congress
- All India Trinamool Congress
- Samajwadi Party
- Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray)
- Nationalist Congress Party–Sharadchandra Pawar
- Rashtriya Janata Dal
- Communist Party of India
- Communist Party of India (Marxist)
- Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and other regional allies.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee arrived in Delhi ahead of the meeting, underlining the importance her party attaches to the opposition coalition despite recent political turbulence in West Bengal.
DMK, AAP stay away
The meeting has attracted particular attention because some significant alliance partners are not participating.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has officially decided to stay away from the gathering. Party leaders have indicated differences with Congress following recent political developments in Tamil Nadu. Reports suggest the DMK is no longer part of the INDIA bloc, marking one of the most serious challenges faced by the opposition alliance since its formation.
The Aam Aadmi Party is also not participating in Monday’s meeting. Their absence has added to concerns regarding the alliance’s ability to maintain a broad anti-BJP front.
Meanwhile, the CPI(M) is represented at the meeting, though General Secretary M. A. Baby is not attending personally.
Congress dismisses rift speculation
Despite reports of tensions among alliance partners, Congress leaders have rejected suggestions that the coalition is falling apart. The party argues that political differences in individual states do not necessarily undermine cooperation at the national level.
Jairam Ramesh stated that parties unable to attend continue to share the alliance’s concerns regarding constitutional institutions, inflation, unemployment, democratic rights, and governance issues under the Modi government.
Why this meeting matters
The June 8 meeting is the first major political huddle of the opposition alliance after a period of intense political churn. With several state elections approaching and the opposition seeking to regain momentum, the discussions are expected to shape the alliance’s future direction.
Political analysts will closely watch whether the INDIA bloc can successfully project unity despite the absence of some major allies and ongoing state-level rivalries. The outcome could influence opposition politics for the coming months and determine whether the coalition can remain a credible national counterweight to the BJP-led NDA.
