India-China officials meeting in Beijing, what issues were discussed in the meeting, read full news

India China Diplomacy: Positive momentum was once again seen at the diplomatic level between India and China when Sujit Ghosh, Joint Secretary (East Asia) of the Ministry of External Affairs, visited China on 11–12 December. During this, he met Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong, Director General of the Asian Affairs Department of the Foreign Ministry and senior officials of the Chinese Commerce Ministry.

According to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, the main objective of the visit was to advance bilateral dialogue, strengthen mutual trust building and enhance cooperation in areas where both countries have common interest. The meetings were said to be constructive and determine future direction.

Discussion on regional and global development

Officials from both countries considered the leaders’ strategic guidance extremely important in India-China relations. It was also acknowledged that positive progress had been made over the past months in people-to-people issues, trade contacts and the dialogue process, which needed to be taken further. The Indian side particularly emphasized on expeditious resolution of pending export control issues.

During the meetings, bilateral programmes, dialogue mechanisms and various exchange activities planned for the coming year were also reviewed. The two sides also briefly discussed issues related to regional and global development.

New direction in relations between countries

A statement issued by China’s Foreign Ministry said that the meeting between Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong and Sujit Ghosh in Beijing was cordial and useful. The Chinese side reminded that the meeting of President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tianjin in August has given a new direction to the relations between the two countries. He expressed hope that both the countries will manage differences better by giving priority to mutual respect, trust and dialogue.

Sujit Ghosh said that India-China relations are extremely important for India and India wants the dialogue mechanism to be reactivated in line with the strategic vision being guided by the leaders of both the countries. He reiterated India’s commitment to restore institutional dialogue, enhance cooperation and bring stability to relations.

Important discussions were also held on trade and economic cooperation. The Indian delegation met Chinese Commerce Ministry officials and discussed bilateral trade, market access and other pending issues. Both sides agreed on the need for transparent and balanced progress in this area.
