Chennai, 14 December. Hosts India created history at the Express Avenue Mall here on Sunday as they defeated Hong Kong 3-0 in the final to lift the Squash World Cup title for the first time. 17-year-old Anahat Singh put the final seal on India’s historic success with a decisive victory.

The performance of the Indian team was excellent in this mixed team event held in Chennai for the third consecutive time. India, seeded second in the tournament, won the title without losing any match. After defeating Switzerland and Brazil by identical 4-0 margins in the group stage, India had defeated South Africa and two-time champions Egypt 3-0 in the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.

Joshna Chinappa caused an upset in the opening match
Joshna Chinappa, ranked 79th in the world, gave India a great start in the final with a 3-1 upset win over 37th ranked player Li Ka Yi. Asian Games medalist Abhay Singh (29 in the world ranking) defeated 42nd ranked Alex Lau 3-0 while 17-year-old Anahat Singh defeated Tomato Ho, ranked 31 in the world ranking, by the same margin to seal the title for India. After this there was no need to play the last match of men’s singles.
