India Denies Rumours of Nationwide Lockdown Linked to Energy Crisis
India’s petroleum minister has dismissed speculation circulating online about the possibility of a nationwide lockdown tied to the energy disruptions caused by the Middle East conflict. Officials clarified that no such proposal is under consideration by the government.
The rumours began spreading after comments by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in parliament referencing lessons from the COVID period while discussing global supply chain disruptions linked to current tensions in the region. The remarks triggered widespread online searches about whether restrictions similar to pandemic measures might be introduced again.
Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the government remains fully prepared to manage energy supply challenges and urged citizens not to rely on unverified reports circulating on social media platforms.
Authorities emphasized that maintaining public confidence is essential during periods of international uncertainty. Officials warned that spreading misinformation about lockdown measures could create unnecessary panic and disrupt normal economic activity.
The government has continued coordinating with state administrations and energy companies to ensure stable fuel distribution despite volatility in global crude markets.
