Library Junction: Mumbai’s local train is considered its lifeline. Mumbai’s local trains work to keep the country’s financial capital running on track. Even though metro network is being laid everywhere in Mumbai. But even today the local train is the most trusted and favorite companion of the people here. Where every day lakhs of people travel to reach their destination. Now a new initiative has been started at Churchgate station to make this journey a little different and better.

Western Railway and Project Mumbai have come together and started “Library Junction” here, which is being seen as the country’s first free station library for passengers. This initiative was inaugurated in the presence of former South African cricketer AB de Villiers. On this occasion, Divisional Railway Manager of Mumbai Central Division of Western Railway, Pankaj Singh and CEO and Founder of Project Mumbai, Shishir Joshi were also present.

Now waiting for the train will be fun, when passengers will have the company of books.

In the busy life of Mumbai, it is difficult for people to find time to read books. In such a situation, this initiative started at Churchgate station will give passengers an opportunity to connect with books during the journey. At present, there is a collection of about 1200 books, which include comics, children’s story books, fiction and non-fiction literature, autobiographies, self-help books and magazines on many subjects. Passengers can take books from here and read them and will also be able to return them within the stipulated time. The objective of this initiative is to provide easy access to books to travelers and common citizens and promote the habit of reading among them.

Special initiatives related to environment and public participation

According to Vineet Abhishek, Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, recycled plastic has been used in preparing this library, which was collected during the “Plastic Recyclethon” campaign. Vineet Abhishek told Tezzbuzz that this initiative is getting full support from Mumbaikars. Apart from new books, the library also has many books which have been donated by Mumbaikars. Supporting this free library, citizens, schools and different communities of Mumbai have participated in it by donating books. This collection of books has been prepared with the cooperation of the people, which makes this initiative a community campaign.

This experiment started at Churchgate station is the first such experiment in the country. Western Railway believes that with the launch of ‘Library Junction’, people’s mobile screen time will be reduced and the culture of reading in public places will be promoted. If this initiative gets good support from the people, then in the coming time such reading centers can be seen at other stations of Mumbai also.
