Runs on hydrogen, does not emit smoke

This train is based on Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell technology. In this, electricity is generated from the chemical process of hydrogen and oxygen present in the air, which runs the train motor. There is no smoke or carbon emission in this process, but only water vapor is released. This is the reason why it is considered better for the environment.MUSCAN (23)

Once filled with gas, it will run for 250 to 350 km.

This hydrogen-powered train can travel about 250 to 350 kilometers once filled with fuel. Its design speed is 110 km per hour, although currently it will be run at a speed of 75 km per hour.

10 coaches, capacity of 2,600 passengers

This train has 10 coaches, which include 8 passenger coaches and 2 power cars. It has seating arrangement for 682 passengers, while in total about 2,600 passengers can travel. Facilities like mobile charging points, automatic doors, comfortable seats and bio-toilets are available for passengers.

Modern technology for security

Hydrogen gas is stored safely in high-pressure cylinders in the train. Hydrogen leak detector, flame detector, smoke and temperature sensors have been installed for safety. In case of any emergency, the system automatically stops the supply of hydrogen.

89 kilometer journey, stop at 12 stations

This train will cover the distance of 89 kilometers between Jind and Sonipat in about two hours. It will stop at 12 stations on the way, due to which local passengers will also benefit from it.

What is the opinion of experts?

Experts say that hydrogen train is an important initiative towards clean energy. However, more than 95 percent of India’s broad gauge rail network is already electrified. In such a situation, hydrogen trains may be more useful in the future mainly on those routes where electric operation is not possible or there are special needs.
