India in action mode on Hormuz crisis, puts forward strong stand in global meeting
Amidst the increasing tension in West Asia and its impact on energy supply, India has shown its active role on the international stage. On Thursday, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri represented the country at a virtual summit organized at the initiative of Britain. About 30 countries participated in this meeting, the main objective of which was to ensure safe maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz which was partially blocked by Iran. This waterway is considered extremely important for global oil and gas supply.
What did Vikram Misri say?
Britain called this conference so that measures to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be considered. India was also invited to participate in this discussion. During the meeting, Vikram Misri clarified India’s position regarding the security of international sea routes and uninterrupted trade. He underlined that maintaining the security of the energy supply chain is extremely important for the global economy.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal also gave information on this issue. He said that India is in constant touch with Iran and other countries in the region to ensure safe and unhindered passage for Indian ships. He said that the safety of ships carrying LPG, LNG and other essential commodities is the priority of the government.
According to Jaiswal, the positive impact of diplomatic efforts made in recent times has also been seen. So far six Indian ships have safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz. India is maintaining constant dialogue with the concerned countries on this issue, so that there is no hindrance of any kind in future.
Meanwhile, the absence of America in this conference organized by Britain also remains a topic of discussion. It is being told that the chances of America joining are less, while other countries are considering diplomatic and political options.
How much oil is transported from Hormuz?
It is noteworthy that Iran has partially blocked this waterway amid the ongoing tension with America and Israel. This has affected the global energy supply and seen an increase in oil prices. About 20 percent of the world’s oil is transported through the Strait of Hormuz, which further increases its strategic importance.
This situation is particularly sensitive for India, as the country is dependent on imports for about 88 percent of its crude oil needs. A large part of this comes from West Asia, which passes through this waterway. It is estimated that 40 to 50 percent of India’s total oil imports depend on the Strait of Hormuz, making its security extremely important for India’s energy needs.
