PM Narendra Modi wrote in X Post on Friday, “I heartily congratulate Mr. Tariq Rahman for leading BNP to a big victory in the parliamentary elections in Bangladesh. This victory shows the confidence of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership. India will stand in support of a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our many ties and advance our common development goals.” I am waiting for you.”

Why is Jamaat’s defeat important for India?

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her party have always been supporters of India, but the history of BNP under the leadership of Khaleda Zia has not been in India’s favor. At the same time, when there was a coup in Bangladesh, fundamentalist organizations were seen dominating the country. In which Jamaat-e-Islami has also been included, which is considered to be influenced by Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI. If Jamaat came to power, there was a possibility of deepening of friendship with Pakistan, because in the government led by Muhammad Yunus, an atmosphere was created against India and the closeness with Pakistan was increasing.

However, Tariq Rahman, who returned to Bangladesh after 17 years, has raised hopes of establishing democracy in the country, which in India’s view is less harmful than Jamaat. Upon returning home, Rahman expressed his desire for good relations with India, but also gave a message of giving priority to the sovereignty and interests of Bangladesh. Now after the coming of BNP government, the relations between India and Bangladesh are expected to improve again.
