India made a great start in Commonwealth Games, Jhandu Kumar won bronze medal in para powerlifting.

New Delhi: Good news has come for India on the second day of the Commonwealth Games being held in Glasgow, Scotland. Bihar’s promising para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar has opened the country’s medal tally by winning the bronze medal in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting competition. Apart from this, Indian athletes also continued their strong performance in their respective competitions in sports like swimming, boxing and lawn bowls.

Medal confirmed by lifting 190 kg

During the competition, Jhandu Kumar successfully lifted a total weight of 190 kg and won the bronze medal. He scored a total of 130.9 marks. In his very first attempt, he lifted 181 kg and scored 124.7 points and made a strong start in the competition. After this, in the second attempt he lifted 190 kg and secured the medal. However, in the third and final attempt he missed the lift of 196 kg by a narrow margin, otherwise the Birmingham 2022 Games record could have been broken. Apart from this, in sports like swimming, boxing and lawn balls, Indian athletes continued their strong performance in their respective competitions.

‘I feel like I am flying in the air’

After registering the historic achievement, Jhandu Kumar expressed his happiness. He said that after winning his first international medal, he felt as if he was flying in the air. Jhandu told that during the competition he had only one goal in his mind to win a medal for India at any cost. He credited his brilliant success to his family, coaches, Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), who continuously supported his training.

On this historic victory of Jhandu Kumar, the Prime Minister of the country Narendra Modi gave him special congratulations on the social media platform X. PM Modi wrote that this success of Jhandu Kumar is the result of his indomitable willpower, physical ability and years of hard, disciplined hard work. He has not only made the country proud by performing excellently on the international stage, but has also become a source of inspiration for crores of Indians.
