Israel Iran War Impact: The heat of increasing tension between Iran, Israel and America has now reached directly to your medical kit. Due to shortage of raw materials and increasing cost of transportation, essential medicines for diseases like fever, diabetes and infections can become costlier by 10 to 20 percent.
India’s pharma industry is largely dependent on import of raw materials i.e. Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). According to the Federation of Pharma Entrepreneurs (FOPE), a huge jump of 20% to 60% has been seen in the prices of these raw materials within just 8-9 days.
Which medicines will have the greatest impact?
Delhi Drug Traders Association says that due to the supply chain being affected, the prices of medicines like Paracetamol, Metformin (diabetes medicine) and Azithromycin are sure to increase. These are the medicines that millions of patients in the country consider as a part of their lifestyle every day.
Why are the prices of medicines increasing?
War or shortage of chemicals is not the only reason behind increasing prices of medicines. According to drug manufacturing companies, the cost of packing materials like aluminum and plastic has also increased by 30-40%. Packaging materials like medicine vials, bottles and foil paper have become many times more expensive.
Additionally, the supply chain has been completely disrupted due to delays in cargo ships and changes in shipping routes. Unless the raw material reaches India on time, the production of medicines will not be normal, due to which there is a danger of shortage of medicines in the market.
Is the stock of medicines going to end?
Seeing the seriousness of the situation, various pharma organizations have submitted an ‘emergency report’ Has been handed over. The letter warns that if the government does not intervene immediately, there could be a severe shortage of essential medicines in the country and the current production contracts will become loss-making.

Experts believe that if the situation does not improve in 10-15 days, the stock of medicines in the market may run out, due to which the risk of black marketing will also increase. However, meanwhile, the news of relief is that India has deployed its warships near the battlefield so that Indian ships can get safe passage.
