Using mobile internet may become expensive in India in the future. The Indian government is looking at the option of imposing a new tax on mobile data. According to the report, in this matter the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has been asked to study it and tell whether it is possible to impose tax on data usage or not.
Instructions given to DoT to investigate
According to media reports, a meeting of the telecom sector was recently organized in which this issue came up. After this, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) was instructed to investigate whether tax can be imposed on the use of mobile data or not and if it can be imposed, then what should be its model.
Rs 1 per GB data tax
If reports are to be believed, if the option that the government is looking at is implemented, there could be a tax of Re 1 per GB of data. If this happens, then every time a user uses mobile data, this additional charge may be added. It is being told that if a tax of ₹ 1 per GB is implemented, then the government can earn up to ₹ 22,900 crore every year.
Still 18 percent GST is charged
Although this is just a proposal, no official announcement or decision has been taken on it. It is noteworthy that India is one of those countries in the world where mobile data is very cheap. Due to cheap internet, mobile data consumption has increased rapidly in India. Another special thing is that 18 percent GST is still charged on mobile recharge and postpaid bills.
