‘India na?’: Mohammad Amir trolled after Samson’s 97 seals win

Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir faced heavy trolling on social media after India defeated the West Indies to book a place in the T20 World Cup semifinals on Sunday.

Amir had earlier predicted that India would fail to reach the last four. Even ahead of the virtual quarterfinal against the West Indies, he stood by his claim that India would fall short. However, opener Sanju Samson delivered a stunning unbeaten 97 off 50 balls to guide India to a five-wicket win while chasing 196.

India lost early wickets in the chase, but Samson anchored the innings with a composed and commanding knock, ensuring his side crossed the line with four balls to spare. Soon after the result, social media users pointed out that Amir’s prediction had backfired, with many poking fun at the former pacer.

Earlier, during a discussion on Geo News’ ‘Haarna Mana Hai’, Amir had downplayed India’s chances of progressing. “It doesn’t matter whether Pakistan qualifies or not, India will not,” he had said confidently.

He had also predicted that India would lose to South Africa in their first Super 8 match. While his co-panellists jokingly dubbed him an “astrologer,” his forecast for the India-West Indies clash proved wide off the mark.

In the match at the Eden Gardens, West Indies posted a competitive 195 for 4 after being put in to bat. Roston Chase laid the foundation before late fireworks from Rovman Powell (34 not out off 19 balls) and Jason Holder (37 not out off 22 balls) lifted the total.

Backed by a crowd of over 65,000, Samson rose to the occasion on a night when several of India’s in-form batsmen struggled. His superb innings powered India to 199 for 5 in 19.2 overs and set up a semifinal clash with England cricket team at the Wankhede Stadium on March 5.
