India names women’s hockey squad for Argentina tour
New Delhi: Hockey India has announced a 24-member Indian women’s hockey team for an upcoming tour of Argentina, scheduled to be held in Buenos Aires from April 13 to 17.
The four-match exposure series is seen as a key preparatory step for major international tournaments, including the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 and the Asian Games. The tour is expected to provide valuable match practice against top-tier opposition.
Balanced squad with experience and youth
The squad reflects a balanced mix of experienced players and emerging talent, signalling the continued growth of Indian women’s hockey. Midfielder Salima Tete will lead the side as captain, providing stability and leadership in the middle of the field.
Chief coach Sjoerd Marijne emphasised that the tour would help test combinations and build depth within the squad ahead of a packed international calendar.
Key returns strengthen the squad
A major boost for the team is the return of forward Deepika after a period of rehabilitation. Known for her drag-flicking ability, her inclusion adds firepower to India’s attacking unit.
During her absence, players such as Navneet Kaur, Manisha Chauhan, Udita and Annu stepped up with strong performances. Annu, in particular, impressed with her drag-flicking skills, ensuring healthy competition within the squad.
Veteran goalkeeper Savita also returns after missing recent qualifiers, strengthening India’s defence. Meanwhile, young goalkeeper Bichu Devi Kharibam has shown promise with her reflexes and composure, adding depth to the position.
Emerging players continue to impress
The squad also sees the return of defender Jyoti and forward Mumtaz Khan, further reinforcing both defence and attack. Consistent performers such as Baljeet Kaur and Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke have retained their places in the team.
Young talents including Rutuja Dadaso Pisal, Ishika and Sakshi Rana continue to feature, highlighting the emphasis on nurturing future stars.
Crucial exposure against Argentina
India will face Argentina in four matches on April 13, 14, 16 and 17 in Buenos Aires. The series is expected to be a challenging test, as Argentina remains one of the top teams in international women’s hockey.
