India Post Office: Now, not just letters but digital revolution, ‘postman’ becomes digital warrior

India Post Office: The year 2025 has been a transformational year for the Indian Postal Department, the department under the Ministry of Communications has not limited its role to just letters, but has established itself as the backbone of digital, financial and administrative services focusing on the common man. According to the year-end review released by the ministry, India Post has utilized its vast network to address service gaps, particularly in rural and remote areas.
The department’s greatest achievement in providing convenience to the common citizen is the expansion of Post Office Passport Seva Kendras, in collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs, with 452 POPSKs functioning across the country by 30 November 2025, bringing passport services to every Lok Sabha constituency. Between January and November, the department processed more than 2.9 million passport-related applications, facilitating applicants and generating a revenue of Rs 114.88 crore to the department.

Financial inclusion and connectivity remain priorities for the Department of Financial Inclusion in 2025. India Post completed nearly 5 lakh door-step KYC verifications for mutual fund investors. Tie-ups with major companies like AMFI, UTI and SBI Mutual Fund made the post office a reliable medium for investment distribution. The department extended its reach in the telecom sector by signing an agreement with BSNL.
SIM card sales and recharges are now available at over 1.64 lakh post offices. In a bid to improve digital connectivity, especially in areas with limited network access, India Post in collaboration with EC and IIT Hyderabad launched ‘DigiPIN, a 10-character geo-coded digital address system that uniquely identifies each 444 meter grid in India.
Similarly, the Department of Posts played an important role in strengthening Aadhaar services. More than 13,000 Aadhaar centers were operated from post offices across the country. More than 1,500 special camps were organized in schools during the National Postal Week. A total of over 23.5 million Aadhaar registrations and updates were done in 2025, generating revenue of Rs 129.13 crore.

The Post Office Unoffice Export Center initiative was expanded to more than 1,000 centers to provide access to global markets for small scale enterprises and artisans. This enabled exports of around 280 crores, which directly benefited women entrepreneurs and MSMEs, contributing to employment generation, the department directly verified 1.69 lakh units under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme. Department of Posts distributed more than 2.8 million national flags under Har Ghar Triranga’ campaign 4.0.
