India’s power centre shifts as state-of-art ‘Seva Teerth’ replaces historic Secretariat Building

New Delhi: In the chapter of modern India, the date February 13, 2026, marks the beginning of a new era. On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi relocated the country’s power centre by moving into the new Prime Minister’s Office, which will be known as ‘Seva Teerth’.

What is Seva Teerth?

The ‘Seva Teerth’ houses the PMO along with the National Security Council Secretariat and the Cabinet Secretariat in the same complex, which were earlier located at different places. According to reports, at around 1:30 pm, PM Modi was scheduled to unveil the name of the ‘Seva Teerth’ building complex.

The features of the Seva Teerth

The Seva Teerth has been built on an area of approximately 2.26 lakh square feet, and the total cost of its construction was approximately Rs 1,189 crore. The Seva Tirtha complex consists of three main buildings, which are Seva Teerth-1, Seva Teerth-2, and Seva Teerth-3.

Seva Teerth-1 houses the Prime Minister’s Office, while Seva Teerth-2 has the new headquarters of the Cabinet Secretariat. The Seva Teerth-3 has the offices of the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) and the National Security Advisor (NSA).

From power centre to history pages

The Secretariat Building witnessed its last working day and meeting on Friday. With the shift to ‘Seva Teerth’, the North and South Block buildings of the Secretariat Building, which were the centre of power of the country for almost a century, will be confined to the pages of history.

The Secretariat Building was built during the British period in the early 19th century. It was designed by British architect Herbert Baker to suit the needs and convenience of the then British administration. But this was insufficient to meet the needs of the new India of the 21st century and led to the reshaping of the Central Vista.
