India reaches 39th position in Global Innovation Index 2024

New Delhi New Delhi: India has moved up to 39th position in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2024, up one place from its previous 40th position among 133 global economies, according to a World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) report. Sharing the achievement on social media platform X, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal attributed India's success to its vibrant startup ecosystem, solid knowledge base and coordinated efforts of public and private research institutions.

The GII serves as an annual benchmarking tool that enables governments to assess the role of innovation in driving socio-economic progress and is internationally recognized for providing insight into innovation trends. While countries such as Switzerland, Sweden, the US, Singapore and the UK have maintained their lead, countries such as India, China, Turkey, Vietnam and the Philippines have demonstrated the most notable progress in the last decade.

India remains the top performer in the lower middle income group, exceeding innovation expectations for the 14th consecutive year. The country is a leader in exports of ICT services, ranking top globally, and shows strong venture capital reception and intangible asset growth. Additionally, India's growing unicorn ecosystem makes it the 8th largest ecosystem in the world.

In its region, India leads Central and Southern Asia, followed by Iran (64th), Kazakhstan (78th) and Uzbekistan (83rd). China remains the leader among middle-income countries, ranking 11th overall. Insights from the GII are intended to assist policymakers and industry leaders in using innovation to address global issues, including climate change.
