India ready for digital census for the first time: Budget of Rs 11,718 crore approved by Cabinet

New Delhi, 12 December. For the first time in India, preparations for digital census have started. A budget of Rs 11,718 crore was approved in the Union Cabinet meeting on Friday for the first digital census proposed in 2027. 30 lakh employees will be deployed for digital census work.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav told media persons that today three big and important decisions have been taken in the cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The first decision is regarding Census 2027. A budget of Rs 11,718 crore has been approved for the census, which is a huge process in the country.

Census will be done in two phases, housing census will start from April 2026

Ashwini Vaishnav said that census will be conducted across the country from 2027. This census will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will be house listing and housing census, which will be conducted from April to September 2026, while the second phase will be population census, which will start from February 2027. He said that the digital design of the census has been prepared keeping in mind data protection.

Census of India is a comprehensive survey of the country’s population, demography, socio-economic status and distribution of resources. It is operated by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.

Earlier, the government had told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that Census 2027 will also include questions related to the period of people’s stay in their current place and the reasons for migration. Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai had given this information in a written reply to a question.

Nityanand Rai was responding to a question on whether any special provisions are being made for enumeration of migrant workers and temporary residents during Census-2027 and whether a separate data collection process is proposed for this. The minister said that migration data is collected on the basis of place of birth and last residence of every person. “The census also collects information about duration of stay at current residence and reason for migration,” he said.

Another cabinet decision – major reform in the coal sector

Giving information about two other decisions of the cabinet, Ashwini Vaishnav said that a major reform has been done in the coal sector of the country – through Coal Setu. A big step has been taken for the welfare of farmers.

India is moving towards self-sufficiency in coal production

Vaishnav said, ‘India is moving towards self-sufficiency in coal production. India has historically produced more than one billion tonnes of coal in 2024-2025. Our earlier dependence on coal imports has now almost reduced. Due to reduced dependence on coal imports, we have saved Rs 60 thousand crores.
