India Russia S-500 Prometey: Is S-400 obsolete now? Know why India is now after Russia’s Brahmastra S-500
News India Live, Digital Desk: A new discussion has gained momentum in defense circles amid Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India. We all know that India already has the world’s best S-400 (S-400 Triumph) air defense system. It is considered a “game changer”. But, now news is coming that India’s eyes are set even further than this, i.e. on S-500 Prometheus. Now this question must be coming in your mind, “Brother, now S-400 has arrived, isn’t that enough? Why do we need S-500?” Let us solve this puzzle in very simple language. S-400 is powerful, but the threat is changing. See, S-400 is the best system in the world which Can shoot down enemy planes and missiles from a distance of 400 kilometers. Fighter jets of Pakistan or China are afraid of its name itself. But in today’s times the method of war has changed. Now the threat is not only from airplanes, now the matter has reached Hypersonic Missiles and space warfare. What is so special about S-500? You can consider S-500 as the “big brother” of S-400 or a more updated version. Some of its features make it different from the rest in the world: King of Range: While the range of the S-400 is 400 km, the S-500 can hit a distance of about 600 km. This means that the enemy will not even have left his house before he will kill him there. Access to space: This is the biggest difference. The S-500 can target not only the air but also satellites or ballistic missiles flying in Earth’s lower orbit (Near Space). That means it also provides ‘space defense’. Breakdown of hypersonic: China is nowadays making such hypersonic missiles which travel 5 times faster than the speed of sound (Mach 5). The S-400 may not be as effective in stopping them, but the S-500 is specifically designed to stop these high-speed threats. This is important considering the intentions of our neighbors. We all know that we are not competing with any small army. On one side there is China which is continuously increasing its technology, and on the other side there is Pakistan. In such a situation, India does not just want to be “equal”, but wants to be “two steps ahead” of them. This is called achieving ‘over-match’ capability. If India gets S-500, then understand that our skies will be completely “sealed”. Be it a nuclear missile or a hypersonic weapon, India’s ‘Air Defense Shield’ will destroy it in the air itself. The overall point is that S-400 is like a ‘sword’ for us, but S-500 will become a ‘shield’ which will be impossible for the enemy to penetrate. Now it remains to be seen whether there is any indication on this deal in the Modi-Putin meeting or not.
