India said on the growing crisis in West Asia – ‘Safety of one crore Indian citizens is our top priority’

New Delhi, 3 March. Amid the growing crisis in West Asia due to joint Israel-US attacks on Iran for the last four days, India on Tuesday stressed the interests of 10 million Indian citizens living in the region and said that possible disruptions in energy supply could be a cause for concern.

to end the conflict Also called for ‘dialogue and diplomacy’

New Delhi also called for ‘dialogue and diplomacy’ to end the conflict as soon as possible, adding that as a neighboring country, India has an important stake in the security and stability of the region and the current developments raise ‘deep concern’.

In its second statement after the attack on Iran by America and Israel and the retaliatory action by Tehran, India said that the security of Indians living in West Asia is its top priority.

External Affairs Ministry official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a statement, ‘We have expressed our deep concern over the outbreak of conflict between Iran and the Gulf region on February 28, 2026. Even at that time, India had urged all parties to exercise restraint, not to escalate tensions and to give priority to the safety of civilians. Unfortunately, the situation in the area has continued and seriously deteriorated during the holy month of Ramadan.

The statement further said, ‘In recent times we have seen not only the intensity of the conflict increasing but also its expansion to other countries. The number of destruction and deaths has increased while normal life and economic activities have come to a standstill. As a close neighbor and a country with a vital interest in the security and stability of the region, these developments are a matter of deep concern for us.

Any major disruption can have a serious impact on the Indian economy.

Underscoring the government’s concern about Indians living in the region, the spokesperson said, ‘About one crore Indian citizens live and work in the Gulf region. Their safety and well-being is our top priority. We cannot remain indifferent to any development that has a negative impact on them. Our trade and energy supply chains also pass through this region. Any major disruption can have a serious impact on the Indian economy. As a country whose citizens play a vital role in the global workforce, India also strongly opposes attacks on merchant ships. In the last few days, some Indian citizens have died or are missing due to such attacks.

Strongly reiterated its appeal for dialogue and diplomacy

Reiterating India’s position, the statement said, ‘In this backdrop, India strongly reiterates its appeal for dialogue and diplomacy. We unequivocally raise our voice in favor of an early end to the conflict. Many precious lives have already been lost and we deeply mourn this.

The Embassy remains in constant touch with its citizens and community organizations

On the steps being taken, the spokesperson said, ‘Indian Embassies and Consulates in the affected countries are in constant touch with Indian citizens and community organizations and are issuing regular advisories as per the need. All possible assistance has been provided to the people stranded due to the conflict. The Embassy and Consulates will continue to actively assist in various consular matters related to the conflict.

The Prime Minister and the External Affairs Minister have discussed with their counterparts

The statement further said, ‘We are in touch with the governments of the region as well as other key partners. The Prime Minister and the External Affairs Minister have discussed with their counterparts. The government will keep a close watch on the developing situation and will continue to take necessary decisions in the national interest.
