India Successfully Tests Indigenous Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile from Odisha

India achieved a major milestone in indigenous defence technology after the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully flight-tested the Long Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast on June 15, 2026. All mission objectives were successfully met during the trial, according to the Ministry of Defence.

The LRLACM is an indigenously developed cruise missile designed to strengthen India’s long-range precision strike capabilities. The missile was tracked and monitored by multiple instruments deployed by the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, Odisha, which confirmed the successful completion of the flight test.

Developed by DRDO in collaboration with Indian industry partners, the missile incorporates advanced technologies developed across several DRDO laboratories. The Defence Research and Development Organisation stated that the Aeronautical Development Establishment served as the nodal laboratory for the project.

Senior officials from DRDO, along with representatives of the Indian Navy and Indian Air Force, witnessed the launch. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the scientists and industry partners involved in the successful test, describing it as an important achievement for India’s indigenous defence ecosystem.

Defence experts consider the LRLACM a significant addition to India’s conventional deterrence capabilities. The missile is designed for precision strikes against land-based targets over long distances and is expected to enhance the operational flexibility of the Indian Armed Forces. Reports indicate that the missile programme builds on previous cruise missile development efforts while incorporating improved guidance and performance systems.

The successful trial comes as India continues to expand its indigenous missile and defence manufacturing programmes under its self-reliance initiative. The achievement further strengthens the country’s position among nations possessing advanced long-range strike technologies.
