India is gearing up to make an ambitious bid to host the 2036 Olympics, marking the first time in history that the country will vie for the prestigious global event.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi confirmed India’s intention to bid during the 141st International Olympic Committee (IOC) session held in Mumbai in 2023.
The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has already submitted a letter of intent to the IOC’s Future Host Commission, signaling the country’s serious commitment to bringing the Olympics to Indian soil. Ahmedabad is expected to be the focal point of the bid, with plans to develop extensive sports infrastructure in the city.
The proposed bid aims to make the Olympics a nationwide movement, with various sports events potentially being hosted in different cities across India. For instance, cricket matches could be held in Mumbai, hockey in Bhubaneswar, and kayaking in Pune. This decentralized approach is intended to showcase India’s diverse culture and capabilities while promoting sports development across the country.
The government has already initiated several infrastructure projects worth over ₹6,000 crore in Ahmedabad, including the construction of the Naranpura Sports Complex and the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave. These facilities are designed to meet international standards and will be pivotal in India’s bid to host the Olympics.
India faces stiff competition from other countries, including Qatar and Saudi Arabia, which are also expected to bid for the 2036 Olympics. However, officials remain optimistic about India’s chances, emphasizing the country’s growing influence in the global sports arena.
Hosting the Olympics would be a monumental achievement for India, providing a significant boost to the nation’s sports infrastructure and economy. It would also inspire a new generation of athletes and promote a culture of sports and fitness across the country.
