This visit of the Air Force Chief is taking place at a time when India has recently approved the proposal to purchase 114 Dassault Rafale fighter aircraft from France. This deal is considered very important for increasing the capability of the Indian Air Force. The Defense Acquisition Council, headed by Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, had approved the proposal, which involves the purchase of military equipment worth a total of Rs 3.60 lakh crore.
Indian Air Force needs and modernization
The Indian Air Force has been working towards modernizing its fleet for a long time. At present the number of fighter squadrons of the Air Force has come down to 31, whereas the sanctioned number is 42. To meet this shortage, India plans to purchase 114 Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA).
This is considered to be one of the biggest defense deals in the world. Aircraft like Lockheed Martin’s F-21, Boeing’s F/A-18 and Eurofighter Typhoon have also been involved in this project.
