India will buy 114 Rafale jets from France, gets approval from CCS
Taking a major step towards enhancing the strength of the Indian Air Force, India has finalized the Letter of Request (LoR) for the purchase of 114 Dassault Rafale fighter aircraft.
New Delhi: India has taken a big step towards further strengthening its air power. Taking forward the process of purchasing 114 new Dassault Rafale fighter aircraft from France, India has finalized the Letter of Request (LoR). This deal is being considered an important milestone in the direction of modernizing the Indian Air Force and increasing its fighter aircraft capability. Under this proposed purchase, about 90 aircraft will be manufactured in India, which will also give a big boost to the “Make in India” initiative.
Big deal for 114 Rafale Jets: What’s the plan?
According to government sources, India has started the official process for the purchase of 114 Dassault Rafale aircraft with France. Under this process, of the total proposed procurement of 114 combat aircraft, approximately 90 aircraft will be manufactured in India. French company Dassault Aviation and an Indian partner will jointly produce. The remaining aircraft will be delivered directly from France in ready condition. The move is part of India’s strategy to strengthen its defense production capacity domestically.
What is LoR and why is it important?
Letter of Request (LoR) is the formal beginning of any international defense deal. In this:
- Essential technical requirements are determined
- Details of the number and capacity of aircraft are given
- Negotiations begin on potential price and supply terms
The Defense Acquisition Council India had approved the proposal three months ago, after which the LoR was finalised. After this, after receiving detailed information related to price, logistics and support from France, India will issue a formal Request for Proposal (RFP).
Final approval and deal process
To finalize this big defense deal, approvals will be required at several levels:
- France sharing pricing and support details
- India-France round of talks
- Defense Ministry Review
- Final approval of Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS)
The government aims to finalize this deal by the end of the current year. Currently the Indian Air Force already has 36 Dassault Rafale aircraft, which were acquired from France. This new deal is expected to significantly enhance India’s air combat capability, especially in terms of border security and strategic operations.
The most important aspect of this deal is that about 90 aircraft will be manufactured in India. This partnership will promote self-reliance in defense production
Will include Indian aerospace companies in the global supply chain. Will encourage local employment and technical skill development. This model will help establish India as a global defense production hub and not just an importer.
The Indian Navy is also working on plans to induct 26 Dassault Rafale Marine aircraft in the coming years. These aircraft are designed to operate from aircraft carriers.
