History of 15 January 1949

On January 15, 1949, the historic moment came for which every Indian soldier was waiting. On the same day Lieutenant General K.M. Cariappa (who later became a Field Marshal) took over command of the Indian Army from General Roy Butcher. Cariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army. This incident officially sent the message that now the Indian Army is completely independent and capable of defending itself and taking decisions.

Contribution of Field Marshal Cariappa
