We all know that Indian parents will conduct extremely detailed background checks before finalising a marriage proposal for their children. They will enquire about the family, education, job, financial status, and reputation of the prospective bride or groom. However, recently it has been reported that a father from Andhra Pradesh took this process a step further. What he did to understand his prospective son-in-law’s character was ask traffic police to check if he had any pending challans.
The unique and slightly humorous incident took place in Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh. It has been reported that a 55-year-old man approached the local traffic police and requested them to verify important details. He asked them to check whether his prospective son-in-law had any traffic challans or road rule violations against his name.
According to reports, the father visited the traffic police unit at Bhanugudi Junction in Kakinada. He then asked the officials to check whether the prospective groom had ever been involved in traffic violations, following which he provided the registration numbers of both the man’s car and two-wheeler and requested a detailed verification.
The father specifically wanted to know if the groom had been involved in offences such as drunk driving, rash driving, driving without a helmet, driving without a seat belt, or any other repeated traffic violations. It was reported that he believed that people who regularly break traffic rules often show a lack of discipline and responsibility in other aspects of life as well.
Now, instead of relying only on conventional background checks, the man wanted to understand the groom’s character through his road behaviour. According to police officials, the father felt that driving habits often reflect important personality traits such as patience, self-control, respect for rules, and social responsibility.
Traffic officials were very surprised by the unusual request made by the man. However, they appreciated the father’s thought process and immediately agreed to help, after which Traffic Inspector Daneti Rama Rao said that the officers contacted the traffic control room and carried out a detailed verification of the vehicle records.
The inspection included checking pending challans, traffic offence history, and any serious violations linked to the prospective groom’s vehicles. After conducting the verification, police found that there were no pending challans against either the car or the motorcycle belonging to the prospective groom.
Officials also confirmed that there was no history of rash driving, drunk driving, or any serious traffic offences associated with him. Following the verification, the police gave the prospective groom a clean chit and informed the father that no traffic violations had been recorded against him.
Now, so far the story seems very unique and slightly funny too. However, this incident has a very touching story behind it. According to officials, the man had lost his wife several years ago and had been raising his daughter alone ever since. Despite facing numerous hardships, he ensured that his daughter received a good education.
His efforts eventually paid off as she successfully completed her BTech degree and became an engineer. They added that after devoting years to raising his daughter single-handedly, the father wanted to ensure that the person she married would take good care of her in the future.
Traffic Inspector Rama Rao stated that the father wanted a son-in-law who would provide his daughter with the same love, support, and care that he had given her throughout her life. The police also said that the father viewed traffic records as an indirect measure of a person’s discipline and sense of responsibility. As a result, he felt that checking the groom’s driving history was an important part of the marriage evaluation process.
As per the reports, after getting to know that the prospective groom had a clean traffic record with no pending challans or serious violations, the father reportedly felt relieved and satisfied. Police officials praised the man’s practical and responsible approach and described it as both rare and thoughtful. They highlighted that while most parents focus on a person’s job, salary, and family background, this particular father chose to evaluate everyday behaviour and respect for rules.
