Sai Varshith Kandula, a 20-year-old Indian national from Chandanagar, India, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for attempting to attack the White House in a bid to overthrow the U.S. government.
Kandula was arrested on May 22, 2023, after he deliberately crashed a rented U-Haul truck into security barriers near the White House. Authorities later discovered that he had expressed admiration for Nazi ideology and sought to establish a dictatorship in the United States.
During court proceedings, prosecutors revealed that Kandula meticulously planned his attack, researching government structures and security measures before executing his failed attempt. However, no weapons were found in his possession, and no injuries were reported during the incident.
Judge Dabney Friedrich, who presided over the case, emphasized the gravity of the offense, stating that such actions posed a significant threat to national security. Kandula pleaded guilty to charges including attempting to damage U.S. property and threatening government officials.
With growing concerns over domestic threats, officials have reiterated their commitment to preventing such attacks. Kandula will serve his sentence in a federal prison before facing possible deportation.
