Indian Railway Infrastructure: Gujarat tops in railway development; 1.28 lakh crore investment for railway infrastructure
Indian Railway Infrastructure: Indian Railways has set a new benchmark in rail transport with record budgetary allocation and rapid infrastructure development in Gujarat. With a historic budgetary allocation of Rs 17,366 crore, the development of a modern safe and secure transport network in Gujarat has gained unprecedented momentum. The average annual railway budgetary allocation for Gujarat was Rs 589 crore in 2009-14, which increased to Rs 17,366 crore in 2026-27. Western Railway has said that this almost 29-fold increase will be important for improving rail connectivity, expanding capacity and strengthening railway infrastructure in the state.
Gujarat’s railway network has expanded rapidly since 2014. Almost 2,900 kilometers of new railway lines have been laid, which is more than the total railway network of many European countries. Additionally, 1,177 flyovers and underpasses have been constructed to eliminate level crossings. This has increased safety and facilitated road-rail transport.
Gujarat has achieved the target of 100% railway electrification and construction is underway at 87 stations in the state. Ahmedabad-Mumbai bullet train project is progressing rapidly. The bullet train project is very important for the country, which uses modern construction techniques, advanced technology and special track system.
6,058 crores have been spent for extensive redevelopment of 87 railway stations in Gujarat under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. Redevelopment work has been completed at 19 of these stations, including Samkhyali, Dakor, Hapa, Jam Jodhpur, Morbi, Okha, Palitana and Porbandar. This has significantly improved passenger amenities and the aesthetic quality of the stations. These services are providing passengers with faster, safer and more comfortable travel options.
Keeping railway safety as top priority, Indian Railways is implementing indigenous ‘Kavach’ automatic train protection system in Gujarat. Out of the 1,842 km of sanctioned route, 96 km of ‘Kavach’ has been installed. So, Western Railway has informed that the work is going on on the 1,674 km route.
Railway infrastructure projects worth Rs 1,28,748 crore are currently underway in Gujarat. These include construction of new railway lines, redevelopment of stations and major safety improvements. The Western Freight Corridor connects Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Punjab under a dedicated freight corridor. Surat will connect the East and West Freight Corridors and a key junction will be developed there. This east-west corridor will connect ports on the west coast of Gujarat with various states across the country.
